The Whalehead Life Saving Station was moved to this location in the famous wild horse sanctuary in the 1980's The current owner's father had the station moved to this lot saving it from demolition by neglect! "Miss Penny" as we call her is caretaker to this fabulous old building located in the middle of a protected wildlife management area. There are no nearby houses. Only sand dunes with wild oats growing on them. The wild horses can be seen grazing nearby on the oat grass and sometimes even come right up to the house. You won't find a more private location while staying in the popular Carova Beach 4 wheel drive area. Bring your fishing rod, binoculars , and sun screen and come visit one of the most beautiful beaches in the United States!

Imagine the Outer Banks 100 years ago.......

It was a time when every ship that sailed past these shores risked destruction from the perilous shoals or sudden storms. It was a time when United States Lifesaving Crewmen kept watch from station houses such as this, risking their lives to save those hapless mariners.

You'll feel the spirit of these brave, rugged crewmen throughout this authentic structure. The WhaleHead Lifesaving Station is available for rent only to those wishing to experience an Outer Banks vacation the 'original way'. Nestled inside 800 acres of wildlife refuge and sandy dunes, your nearest neighbors will probably have four feet and a tail, or wings and a beak. Just a short distance from the ocean, but driving is an option. (approximately 1000 ft)

The Station, although a historic building preserved in a rustic state, has most of the comforts of home. The shared eat in kitchen is a guaranteed gathering place equipped with refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, and most small kitchen appliances. The 2 adjoined bedrooms and bath will accommodate a 4 person group nicely. The first floor bedroom will be occupied by the caretaker/owners and her pet birds. The loft living room is another visiting area where Lifesaving Crewmen spent free time between storms and their daily duties. All Rooms have ceiling fans and natural cross ventilation (no A/C except window units in the bedrooms). Expansive wrap-around decks provide a sunny spot and wonderful views from all directions, all day long.

So plan for an outback style adventure and be sure to pack your imagination, that way you'll be assured of hearing the echoes of its seafaring history in the halls. One of its most endearing features is never ending privacy.

Private bath located down the hall. 4 person MAX. Hot water outside shower available. Kitchen privileges. No central air. (window units in the bedrooms).

a guest from Virginia Beach, VA recommends this vacation rental

For our first family vacation, we chose this rental for it's uniqueness and one-of-a-kind experience. At first we were a little hesitant reading, "the owner stays in the house" - but Ms. Penny made the stay SO much better than we could have ever imagined. Renters have the upper level to themselves and their own fridge in the shared kitchen; Ms. Penny has her own in a separate area. She is very respectful if you want privacy, but honestly one of the highlights of our trip was our evening talks with her and hearing her stories. The description for this rental really should start with the amazing hospitality from Ms. Penny you will receive, then the history of the Whalehead Life Saving Station, & the experience of a lifetime you will have. Ms. Penny has made efforts to make it as comfortable as possible with amenities such as window A/C units, but being that the station was built in 1868 it is not a ritzy hotel - so if you need a bell boy and room service, go elsewhere. But if you are looking for an unforgettable stay with panoramic views of Carova Beach, spending time on the sand or in the water, to learn the history of the Outer Banks, get all the in's and out's/general information that no other place will give you, and the best part - to make a wonderful friend - then you definitely need to stay here. We hope to go back soon!

This place is truly one of a kind. You will either love it or hate it depending on your personality. It does not come with all the luxury's of a modern day hotel however if your looking for a place to go back in time with a laid back host named Penny who will talk your ear off if you let her then this is the place for you. Penny was very kind and gave us information that we would not have had visiting the Outer Banks for the first time which we were very appreciative of. She went the extra mile to make sure that we were as comfortable as that place could be. She is very kind. This place will come with bugs and not the most comfortable bed in the world so please know that but if you like a camping feel then this will be one step up.

THANKS for your nice review. We are so glad that Penny's dad had the foresight to move this relic of the past! These buildings were built to house the Life Saving Crews who would rescue foundering ships off the coast. The original woodwork and most of the original building, including the boat storage and BOAT along with the observation tower make this a history lover's delight. So glad you got to see it and feel the relaxation of days gone by.

I purposely sought out a place where I could relax and totally disconnect - the Whalehead Lifesaving Station proved to be exactly what I was looking for. This is the place where time stands still. The building is primitive and simple (only the bedrooms are air conditioned.) But little things make the difference - the delicious well water, the constant cool breeze over the dunes, the spectacular sunsets and sunrises seen from the tower, the boat room with its nautical memorabilia, the beach close by but far enough away to allow solitude, the wild horses that graze in the distance as you drink your morning coffee and the clearest night sky you will ever see. This is a place that is unlike any other. This is a place for adventurers, writers, readers, nature lovers and those that go with the flow.

I speak for our entire family (mom, dad, 19 yr old son and 14 yr old daughter) when I describe our stay at Whalehead as absolutely perfect! The home is an historic treasure -- I mean how cool is it that when we visited the nearby Currituck Lighthouse we saw a picture of the very house we were staying in right there on display?!? The house was immaculately clean, Ms. Penny was delightful and the surroundings were amazing. While there we saw horses, deer, dolphins, and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. We had been a little hesitant about staying in a shared home, but Penny is a pro -- she strikes the perfect balance of being available for questions and guidance without infringing on her guest's privacy or personal space/time. Also, this was our first time driving on the beach, but our Jeep Wrangler had no problems at all (and no beach driving permit is required). Once there, you can easily walk from the house down to the beach and there are plenty of beach visitors nearby so you don't have to be nervous about no one else being around if you needed help. If you are looking to stay in the lap of luxury, this isn't for you. However, if you want to "get away" and experience a calm and relaxation that is reminisent of a simpler era I can't recommend Whalehead highly enough!

Whaleshead Lifesaving Station was everything we hoped for and more. We spent our 30th anniversary here and it was so special. It was quiet and cozy. We spent our time on the deck out front where there was always a breeze or on the beach where the water was always cool and fresh. We enjoyed seeing the horses grazing on the dunes, the dolphins swimming out in front of the house, and simply relaxing. We also thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Ms. Penny....she is a treasure. This property holds so many stories and so much history, and Ms. Penney holds these stories in her heart and mind. Thank you so much. We will treasure our week for the rest of our lives, and we look forward to returning soon!
